Livelihoods & Climate Change

Livelihoods & Climate Change

Raised Funds 70%

Uganda has experienced increased inconsistency and unpredictability weather patterns contributing to low rainfall, turning out to be a major threat to the agriculture sector, the major source of income to majority of the households in the country.  Prolonged droughts and rainfall which is less regular has turned perennial rivers into seasonal rivers, and some water sources dry out during drought seasons, this has affected many communities.  Leading to an increase in seasonal migration of adult men looking for work, leaving women behind at home.

The unsustainable management of the natural resources has caused declining productivity and resilience, resource scarcities, inequitable access that breeds conflicts, population displacements and worsen human vulnerability. As such, ecosystem management and restoration are key for enhancing land productivity, reducing poverty and enhancing resilience of resource-dependent populations.

Increasing the capacity of local communities to adapt to, and implement livelihood options that are resilient to climate change are options for consideration in our interventions.  OMUSDI is committed to enhancing the capacity of local communities to support local adaptation and disaster risk reduction initiatives. We build, boost, transform women’s and their families’ resilience to climate change for empowering livelihoods. In an ever-extreme climate change, these women farmers and their families face a high degree of food insecurity and income fluctuation due to their engagement in such a weather-dependent agricultural practice.

 Our interventions

  • Empower the most vulnerable families economically to get out of extreme poverty. This is intended to make poverty-stricken families become economically self-reliant and have the dignity and means to provide for their own children.
  • Strengthening food production, resilience and access to markets / financial services – so that farmers can produce more, better and more sustainable nutritious food for household consumption and marketing purposes.
  • Promoting sustainable employment opportunities and market systems so that communities have access to goods, services and employment opportunities through private sector partnerships.
  • Promote women economic empowerment, through access to opportunities, services, and resources, and intervention, to help them take part in decision-making at household, community, markets and their well-being.

Our main goals

To promote and empower the social, economic status of vulnerable groups in Uganda with emphasis on women, youth and children through multi-dimensional programs that are planned to support their livelihoods.
